11th Grade Test Prep Essentials
If time and cost are big determining factors in your choice of a test prep partner, then Test Prep Essentials may be a good fit for your student. BUT you should consider the following questions before making that decision.
- Does your student know the test score range they need in order to reach all of their goals for college admissions, including honors programs and scholarships?
- Is your student already scoring in a certain range where they could expect to reach those score goals in a shorter period of time?
- And most importantly, is your student willing to commit both the time and effort required to reach those goals in a shorter time frame?
Having an honest conversation with your student about the work required to reach his or her college admissions goals is a great way to set expectations and avoid frustration.
Note: The Essentials program is prep for the SAT® test only and runs November through April.
Let’s take a look at what’s included in the 11th Grade Test Prep Essentials program.
What’s Included
Initial Diagnostic Test
New students take an initial diagnostic test to establish a baseline score to help track progress throughout the program and in some cases help place the student into a class section with similarly scoring students. When possible, this test should be taken before attending the first lesson.
Recorded Student and Parent Orientation
Following registration, students and their families receive a phone call and an email confirming their registration details. A link to the on-demand Test Prep Essentials orientation is included in the email. Students and at least one parent should watch the orientation for clarity on the program and how to get the most out of it. It’s key to student success, so don’t skip this step!
Lessons for the SAT Test
This course includes one set of lessons (in person or live online) for the SAT test.
These two-hour, lecture-style classes use our proprietary curriculum, updated every year to reflect changes in the national testing environment. Lessons teach students content and concepts from the national tests, how to approach question types, and how to apply specific strategies to get answers quickly and confidently.
There are 14 scheduled class times: six math lessons, six verbal lessons, a post-lesson diagnostic test (Lesson 13), and the final lesson where students review strategies and next steps.
KD Student Portal
Essentials students will also have access to the KD Student Portal for homework explanation videos, workshop registration, and the test review process.
Homework Assignments
Each lesson contains ~15-30 minutes of homework for extra practice. Homework answers and explanations are found in the student portal.
Instructor-Led Workshops
Instructor-led workshops (with new curriculum each week) provide year-round, targeted practice for students to get help on question types that occur most frequently and are the most challenging. The goal of a workshop is practice towards mastery.
From the beginning of their program, we recommend Essentials students attend at least two workshops each month. Students may attend up to a maximum of 20 workshops over the course of the program.
Practice Tests With Reviews
Full-length practice tests for the SAT test help students build mental endurance and put it all together.
After taking a practice test, students receive a detailed test analysis identifying their strengths and weaknesses.
Students review each practice test using self-correction for easier problems, guided explanations for more difficult problems, and personalized help sessions for the most challenging problems. The goal is to incrementally improve test-taking skills while learning from mistakes. Each practice test must be reviewed before taking additional tests.
Essentials students may take up to ten practice tests over the course of their program, if they follow our recommendations.
