Great question! You probably already know that KD offers test prep programs for 7th-12th graders, and we also offer college counseling services that are relevant for those same grade levels (for an additional fee). We’re always working on expanding our offerings for every grade level. Students in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade can benefit from our college prep packages and get exactly what they need as they move closer to their college application season.
It’s possible for a family to navigate the college admissions process on their own. But it’s a labor-intensive and complicated process that parents and students often underestimate in terms of time and stress. The college admissions landscape has also changed drastically over the past 30 years—what worked in 1995 won’t have the same results today.
Choosing a college prep partner is a big decision—and one that should be made very carefully based on the unique goals and circumstances of each student. Utilizing KD’s College Prep Package gives families peace of mind and a roadmap for the challenging process of earning acceptance into a best-fit college. From test scores to making a final college decision, KD’s team of experienced advisors and college counselors guides families through every step of the way. Additionally, there are cost savings by bundling the services together.
It’s pretty simple. When 9th, 10th or 11th grade families decide to register with KD College Prep, they can choose only the Complete Test Prep program, or they can choose to register for a grade-specific College Prep Package. Generally, students will focus on the test prep portion of the package first, though that timing depends on a student’s start time, goals, and outcomes.
The APPLY NOW! Advantage Program (the college counseling piece of the package) begins in the summer or early fall for 9th graders, or the fall of a student’s 10th or 11th grade year, depending on when the student registers. The Advantage program continues until final college decisions are made (usually in spring of the 12th grade).
Doing test prep and college counseling together may seem overwhelming at first, but our teams are expert partners in guiding families through the timing of each step. Obviously, timing depends on the student. But the answer to this question is the same as many other questions we get about the test prep and college admissions process: Students who start early typically see the best results. Even if you decide to prep on your own or with someone else, it’s best to plan ahead and give a student plenty of time to build the best college application possible. The amount of work that needs to be done doesn’t change if you wait. You just have less time to complete it.
